Suspects causing disturbance at Tian'anmen Square arrested

Two people were arrested Friday for recently disturbing social order at Tian'anmen Square in the Chinese capital, officials of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Public Security said at a news conference.

On Oct. 1, the National Day, Ye Guoqiang jumped into the Jinshui River, which is on the northern fringes of the Tian'anmen Square and supplies water to the Forbidden City, causing a serious disturbance.

Police also found the 43-year-old Beijinger has made many attempts to cause trouble in the Tian'anmen Square area and areas near government departments and foreign embassies since May 2003.

Also arrested was 49-year-old Zhang Liji, a native of Fuzhou City of east China's Fujian Province. On Oct. 8, Zhang drove a car to a bridge on the Jinshui River and threw leaflets out of the car.

Zhang then attempted to set himself and the car on fire by igniting the gasoline and fireworks on board his automobile before being prevented by police.

Yu Hongyuan, vice director of the Beijing Municipal Burea of Public Security, said on Friday that unjustly motivated people, who take extreme measures to disturb social order, endanger public security and pressure the government, will be severely punished according to law.

Another 16 people were also put under short-term police custody for their lawbreaking behaviors at the Tian'anmen Square in the past two weeks.
