China is ready to make joint efforts with the United States to maintain and carry forward the good momentum of the Sino-US ties and effect still a greater growth for the constructive partnership of cooperation, President Hu Jintao said Thursday.

During a meeting with George Bush, former president of the United States, Hu appreciated Bush's prolonged attention and dedication to improving and developing Sino-US relations.

In recent years, Hu recalled leaders of the two sides had maintained close contacts and consultations, and had a frequent exchange of views on issues of common concern, which played an important role in boosting bilateral ties.

As the proper handling of the Taiwan issue was crucial to the steady growth of the Sino-US ties, Hu stressed, China hoped that the US side would abide by its commitments, adhere to the one-China policy and the three joint communiques, oppose "the independence of Taiwan", and avoid sending out any erroneous signals to "Taiwan-independence forces" or doing anything that is detrimental to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

The US side should play a constructive role in China's peaceful reunification, the Chinese president said.

Concerning the Korean Nuclear issue, Hu noted, a peaceful resolution of the Korean nuclear issue was in the interests of all parties concerned. To attain this goal, concerted efforts of all parties are required, he said, regarding the continuation of the Beijing six-party talks as most essential.

Bush said he was pleased to have this opportunity to revisit China and meet with President Hu again, saying that US-China relations, the most vital bilateral ties of the United States, were developing in a very sound way.

He went on to say that the United States thanked China for the leading role it had played in resolving the Korean nuclear issue in a peaceful way.

The US side understood China's concerns over the Taiwan issue, Bush said, expressing his belief that the Bush administration would keep to the one-China policy and the guidelines enshrined in the three joint communiques signed by the two countries.

Bush said he had all along been positive in promoting the US-China relations and would make further efforts to this end.

The former US president and his party have come to visit China at the invitation of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign countries.
