Rwandan president hails China over 4m dollars' support

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has praised the Chinese people for their support of a 4-million-US-dollar rice farming scheme to Rwanda.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has praised the Chinese people for their support of a 4-million-US-dollar rice farming scheme to Rwanda.

He made the remarks while launching this 300 hectares of rice farming scheme in Umutara province, north of the country.

The project has been in existence for the last 18 months and has been both financed and managed by the Chinese government. The project consumed more than 4 million US dollars and about 960 people have been employed by the project.

In his speech, President Kagame also said, " Here now through with the elections which I don't doubt that they went on smoothly and were conducted in a transparent way. I therefore call on you people of Umutara province and the entire population of Rwanda to concentrate on work and live in harmony which is the base of development."

Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda Shen Jiangkuan in his speech also congratulated President Paul Kagame on his recent landslide victory and all people of Rwanda for a big step taken in developing their country.

He added that China will always support Rwanda in many activities that will see Rwandans live a better life.

"We're here to promote and strengthen our relationship and havea good cooperation," the ambassador remarked.

The ambassador later signed a memorandum of understanding with Rwandan Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ephraim Kabaija. Other cabinet ministers, diplomatic corps and a crowd of residentsalso attended the functions.
