China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) signed Monday a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in information and communications technology (ICT) in Bali, Indonesia, the venue of the forthcoming ninth ASEAN summit.

The document was signed by Chinese Minister of Information and Technology Wang Xudong and ASEAN Secretary General Ong Keng Yong, witnessed by ministers of economic affairs from 10 ASEAN member countries, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

It covers various fields of common interest including human resource development; information infrastructure development; technology development; ICT application development; e-ASEAN projects implementation; exchange of information on ICT best practices; compatibility, integrity and security of ICT systems and an annual ASEAN-China ICT seminar.

After the signing ceremony, Wang Xudong said that the signing of the MoU between China and ASEAN will usher in a new stage of cooperation in information and communication technology between China and ASEAN member states, and set a foundation for the mid-to-long term development of the cooperation.

As both China and ASEAN attach great importance to the development of the IT industry, and share common goals in this regard, the Chinese minister noted, there are wide and bright prospects for the cooperation in ICT development between the two sides, and China is committed to fully implementing the MoU.

"On behalf of the ASEAN member countries, we want to say that this MoU on ICT cooperation is an important document and it will charter the directions of our ICT cooperation in the next several years," Ong Keng Yong said.
