A total of 5,000 soldiers and policemen will be deployed in various areas in Metro Manila when United States President George W. Bush visits the country on Oct. 18, officials said Monday.
National Police chief Director General Hermogenes Ebdane said the Philippine security force will mostly come from the Civil Disturbance Management groups of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces to ensure that no untoward incident willoccur during Bush's 8-hour visit.
In addition, Ebdane said personnel of the Metro Manila Development Authority will ensure easy flow of traffic in areas where Bush's party is expected to pass.
"All contingency measures are in place to ensure that none of the visitors and even local officials would be humiliated by groups who are out to sow chaos to dramatize their anti-American sentiments," he said.
Ebdane said he has coordinated with the Bureau of Immigration to initiate deportation proceedings against any foreigner who would be arrested by joining any mass action on Oct. 18.
Military authorities have said that 1,000 personnel from the elite Presidential Security Group will augment the US Secret Service in securing Bush.
At present, the group elements are undertaking re-training in VIP (Very Important Person) security, intelligence and operations as part of their preparation.
