Myanmar Deputy Foreign Minister U Khin Maung Win has voiced support for proposals due to be discussed at the forthcoming summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which call for establishing regional economic and security communities.
The ASEAN summit is due to open in Bali, Indonesia on Tuesday.
Myanmar believed that the economic and security communities will serve to ensure enduring peace and stability as well as progress and prosperity in the region, U Khin Maung Win was quotedby Monday's Myanmar Times as saying.
The ASEAN economic community was proposed by Singapore in 2002,while the ASEAN security community by Indonesia in June this year.
With regard to Myanmar's attendance at the summit, the deputy foreign minister said a delegation, headed by Prime Minister General Khin Nyunt, is well prepared to reply to questions over the country's political situation expected to be raised at the summit.
The transferring of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi (ASSK) from detention to house arrest late last month after she was discharged from hospital has brought improved atmosphere to the summit, he noted.
The seven-point political "roadmap" for transition to democracyannounced by Khin Nyunt on Aug. 30 has also resulted in that regional perceptions about Myanmar had changed dramatically for the better, he said.
Myanmar joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in July 1997.
