The United States public's confidence in President George W. Bush's ability to deal wisely with international crises and the nation's economy slid sharply over the past five months, showed a new poll released on Friday.

Americans are for the first time more critical of Bush's ability to handle both foreign and domestic problems, according toa nationwide New York Times/CBS News telephone poll.

Just 40 percent of the 981 respondents said they believe Bush can make right decisions on economy, down from 50 percent in April.

Six in 10 Americans said the national economy is worse than what it was when Bush took office in 2001, and jobs have been lost rather than created during Bush's tenure in office.

The poll showed that 45 percent of the surveyed have confidencein Bush's ability to deal wisely with an international crisis, compared with 66 percent in April.

Only 44 percent of the polled approved of Bush's overall handling of foreign policy, down from July's 52 percent, while 47 percent supported Bush's policy on Iraq, much less than July's 58 percent.

On Bush's overall job performance, 51 percent expressed their approval, but the figure was 80 percent in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and 60 percent at the beginning of the Iraq war in March.
