China is making efforts to maintain a balanced development in four areas while trying to realize an affluent society, a senior legislator told a Pacific Rim roundtable conference Monday in Beijing.

Cheng Siwei, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, said in a speech at the opening ceremony of the Pacific Rim Forum Special China Roundtable that China is trying to maintain a balanced development between its economy and social affairs, urban and rural areas, developed and underdeveloped areas and to keep a harmonious relationship between humans and nature.

China aims to build an affluent society by the year 2020. Its average economic growth rate for the past 20 years remained at 9.3percent.

"It is a top concern for many people whether China's economic growth can be sustained," he said.

"I am optimistic of reaching the goals."

Cheng, also a scholar who has written several books about China's economic development, said although there are some problems with the Chinese economy and social affairs, China is aware of them and making efforts.

China enjoys a stable political and social order with its economy growing strongly, he said, adding that its strong growing market demand, cheap but high-quality labor forces and improved investment environment will contribute to sustainable economic growth.

The conference, organized by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the Pacific Rim Forum, was attended by about 150 experts, businessmen and former political figures, including former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke.
