Roh Moo-hyun suspends libel suit against newspapers

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun applied for a provisional suspension of a libel suit he filed against an opposition lawmaker and four local newspapers, presidential spokesman Yoon Tai-young said Friday.
Yoon said at a news conference, "President Roh decided to suspend the suit until the end of his five-year presidential term considering his position as head of state."
"Although Roh filed an unprejudiced complaint, he made up his mind to put it off fearing the suit might stir controversy over the court's neutrality," Yoon said.
President Roh launched a 3 billion won defamation suit against Rep. Kim Moon-soo and the presidents of four major Korean newspapers last month over allegations that his elder brother and close aides profited from shady real estate deals.
In a petition filed at the court by Duksu Law Offices, Roh said Kim defamed him with accusations and the major newspapers -- Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo, DongA Ilbo and Hankook Ilbo -- blindly reported and published them, bringing disgrace on him.
