All poultry exported from China's mainland to Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) will be vaccinated with H5 bird flu bacterin starting from the end of this year, according to the Macao Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau Friday.
The bureau said that it will send officials to a H5 bird flu bacterin production plant in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province by the end of this month to acquire more information on the bacterin.
Poultry vaccinated with H5 bird flu bacterin are less likely to be infected with H5 bird flu, which is one of the most infectious. The bacterin is supposed to have no effect on the succulence and taste of the meat.
Like Hong Kong, Macao mainly depends poultry supply on the mainland. Macao imported a total of 2.77 million heads of poultry including chicken, duck and geese from the mainland last year. Although no infection of bird flu has been monitored in Macao, several cases have been found in neighboring Hong Kong, which aroused the concern. Poultry supply to Hong Kong began to be vaccinated with H5 bird flue bacterin this month.
