Acting Mayor of Beijing Wang Qishan presented 15 foreigners working in Beijing with Great Wall Friendship Awards Wednesday.
The award-winning foreign experts came from 11 countries, including David Bekedam, the World Health Organization representative in China, five teachers and elite experts working in local enterprises.
"Beijing has become our second hometown and we feel comfortable living here," said Juerg Steiner, head of Technical Operations of Beijing Novartis Pharmacy Operations.
Vice Mayor of Beijing Zhang Mao said that introducing foreign intelligence poses as an important part of China's reform and the municipal government of Beijing hopes more foreign experts and overseas Chinese can take part in the modernization of the city.
Set up by the municipal government in 1999, the Great Wall Friendship Award is the top honor for foreign experts working in Beijing and is presented annually to those who have contributed tothe development of the Chinese capital. A total of 63 foreign experts have won the awards.
In China, foreign experts refer to foreign professionals invited by departments concerned to work in the country and therefore enjoy preferential treatment.
The Chinese government provides them with convenient working and living conditions and presents the outstanding ones with various honors and prizes.
