Swedish police have arrested a new suspect for the murder of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh and a former suspect seized last week was released for inadequate evidence, a public prosecutor said Wednesday.
Prosecutor Agneta Blidberg, who was in charge of investigations into Lindh's murder, told a press conference that the new suspect could be the real murderer.
A senior police official told reporters that there was nothing dramatic during the arrest and that the suspect has a record of previous offenses.
Although no details about the new suspect were disclosed by the prosecutor and the police, local media said the police appeared to be more confident in the latest arrest.
The former suspect, 35, was released and cleared by the police on Wednesday morning. Upon his capture on Sept. 16, local media reported that he has 18 previous convictions for crimes including fraud and theft, as well as violence and threats involving knives.
Lindh, 46, was stabbed at a department store in Stockholm on Sept. 10, and died of serious wounds a day later.
The popular foreign minister had been in the forefront of campaigning for Sweden's accession to the euro currency. In a referendum on Sept. 14, 56.1 percent of Swedes voted against joining the euro zone.
