Russia
n authorities filed an extradition request with
Greece
on Monday for Vladimir Gusinsky, wanted by Moscow on multimillion-dollar fraud charges.
Gusinsky, who was arrested in Athens last month, will now have to wait for an appeals court ruling in the coming days to see if he will be extradited.
"We received it [the request] today through the Greek Foreign Ministry, and the order will be sent to the appeals court," a Justice Ministry official said. "The appeals prosecutor will have to make a proposal, and the appeals council will then meet to rule on this case."
The extradition request will be presented to a council of appeals, which will decide whether to send the former media mogul to Russia.
"The request will go to the council probably the day after tomorrow, but I don't yet know when to expect a decision," said Gusinsky's lawyer, Alexandros Likourezos. "We will first have to carefully examine the papers from Russia."
The
United States
and
Israel
have urged Greece not to extradite Gusinsky.
Gusinsky was released on bail after spending five days in an Athens prison in late August. Since then, he has been staying at a central Athens hotel.
