Pakistan on Monday said it is not desperate for talks with India but wants dialogue in the interest of peace and stability of the region.
Replying to questions in a weekly news briefing here, Foreign Office spokesman Masood Khan said Pakistan's stand has been very consistent and forthright as there cannot be meaningful progress without dialogue.
The spokesman stressed that any talks between the two countrieshave to be on the basis of sovereign equality.
He said that, while leaders of both India and Pakistan will be in New York, it is important that the international community persuades the Indian prime minister and Indian leadership to resume dialogue with Pakistan and resolve the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.
Complaining that the international community is not doing enough in this connection, Masood Khan urged the United Nations todo more actively for the resolution of Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
Referring to remarks of the Indian leaders that there would not be any meeting with Pakistani leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, the spokesman said Islamabad has made no specific request for such a meeting. He said Indian leaders spread rumors themselves and then deny them.
In reply to a question, the spokesman said that President Pervez Musharraf would raise the Kashmir issue at the UN General Assembly. In addition, President Musharraf will highlight the need for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute and human rights violations in the Indian-held Kashmir.
