Fomina shines as Russia beat Australia 2-1 in Women's World Cup

Elena Fomina scored a late winner to help Russia beat Australia 2-1 in a Women's World Cup Group D match at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, on Sunday.

Elena Fomina scored a late winner to help Russia beat Australia 2-1 in a Women's World Cup Group D match at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, on Sunday.

The Australian, who lost their four matches out of five leadingto the World Cup, played the ball smoothly and look confident in the opening match of the Group D, which also includes China and Ghana.

Australia went ahead in the 38th minute after several thrillingmovements. Rhian Davies arched a long ball into the path of striker Danielle Small in the box. Russian goalkeeper Alla Volkovacame out and Small hit the ball against the post. Kelly Golebiowski was the first to drive the ball into the bottom cornerof the net.

But the Russians levelled the score only one minute later through a Dianne Alagich own goal.

Russian defender Marina Saenko crossed from the right and Alagich tried to poke it away, but it deflected into the goal.

Australia took a lion's share of possession in the second half and the Russians were forced to struggle.

But the Europeans got a golden chance to go ahead after being awarded a penalty in the 72nd minute but midfielder Fomina's shot hit the crossbar and rebounded to safety.

Fomina made up for her mistake in the 89th minute when her 20-meter shot deflected off Australian captain Cheryl Salisbury into the net.
