FIFA pays China big for relocating Women's World Cup
China has been paid one million U.S. dollars by world soccer's governing body FIFA for losing their hosting right of the fourth Women's World Cup, FIFA said on Monday.
China has been paid one million U.S. dollars by world soccer's governing body FIFA for losing their hosting right of the fourth Women's World Cup, FIFA said on Monday.
FIFA general secretary Urs Linsi disclosed the figure in a news conference in Los Angeles, clearing the rumors after it took away China's hosting rights for the fatal disease SARS in May that it will pay the country about 23 million yuan (about 3 million US dollars).
Linsi said, "We rewarded them for their costs. China had hired staff and had expenses so we paid them."
FIFA's other compensation includes awarding the 2007 Women's World Cup to China.
The Women's World Cup, which kicks off here on Saturday, has been prepared by the new hosts for only 128 days. "Normally we need three years to plan these tournaments," said Linsi. "So to have a setup like this in 128 days is exceptional. But it was noteasy."
