China grabbed all four gold medals at stake in the first day competitions of the 15th Asian Athletics Association (AAA) Championships which opened on Saturday.

The clean sweep of golds indicated a good omen for the regional powerhouse to fulfil its expectation of grabbing at least 11 of the 43 golds to be contested in the four-day regional meet.

In the women's 10,000m final, the last final of the day at the Rizal Memorial track oval in downtown Manila, China's Sun Yingjie crossed the finish line with a timing of 32:37.04 to win the gold as widely expected.

Sri Lanka's Sujeewa Nilmini Jayasena, bare-footed in the race, took the silver in 34 23.28.

The meet's first gold was also won by China as Li Meiju won the women's shot put gold by throwing to a distance of 18.45 meters. Her teammate Li Fengfeng got the silver in 18.07, leaving Chinatsu Mori of Japan to pocket the bronze in 17.80.

In the women's triple jump, Huang Qiuyan unleashed her jump to a distance of 14.39 meters for the gold. Anastasiya Juravleva of Uzbekistan obtained the silver in 14.21, and Huang's fellow Chinese, Zhang Hao, took the bronze in 13.63.

The first-day competitions produced only one gold in the men's events and Wu Tao of China triumphed in the discus throw final in 61.43 meters. Iran's Abbas Samimi got the silver with a showing of 59.51, followed closely by Indonesian Anil Kumar in 59.50.

Kan Fulin, head coach of the Chinese delegation, said in an interview on Saturday morning that China hopes to win at least 11 golds in the four-day meet which is attracting some 1,500 athletes from 43 of the 45 AAA members.

Absent from the biannual trackfest were AAA's other two members of Bhutan and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
