US-led Coalition Headquarters' spokesman Colonel Rodney Davis confirmed Friday that the explosion outside the US Bagram base was a contingency.

"Initial indications are this incident was not the result of any hostile intent but an accident involving persons operating at a local business engaged in the disassembly of ammunition and weapons components," said the spokesman on a press briefing handed out by E-mail.

The explosion occurred at about 1:15 p.m. on Friday outside the main gate at Bagram Air Field. Seven Afghan citizens were killed while a dozen injured in the incident.

Coalition personnel were not involved in the incident and there were no coalition casualties, said Davis.

According to local authorities, the incident is under investigation by the Bagram police.
