Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Thursday that China is not a threat to the Asian region in terms of economy and security, but China offers trade opportunities which Malaysia should take advantage.
Abdullah, who returned home from a five-day official visit to China, told reporters at the airport upon arrival that his trip is highly successful and he is happy to have met so many of China's leaders to exchange views with them.
"We had warm and cordial discussions. We discussed bilateral trade and issues affecting East Asia, ASEAN, West Asia and also regarding the UN," he said.
The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), consistingof 10 countries in the region, was set up in 1967 to promote regional security and economic cooperation.
He said that his visit to China enabled the two countries to forge closer cooperation in the fields of biotechnology, educationand information and communications technology (ICT).
Meanwhile, he said, "we also need to think of setting up a Chinese Studies institute and there is relevance in view of the increasingly enhanced relations between Malaysia and China."
The vice premier said that Malaysia should learn more about China in terms of its political, social, cultural, economic and legal aspects.
The better understanding of China and its people will help boost bilateral ties, he added.
During the trip, Abdullah visited China's capital city of Beijing and southern city Xiamen. The two countries signed over 10cooperation documents covering various fields.
