Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen Friday hailed his country's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), calling it a "historic day in Cambodia's history."
"It is a historic day that Cambodia has been admitted to the WTO," Hun Sen said at a weekly cabinet meeting Friday.
"We are proud of it, and it's the results of the efforts made by our people and the government," he added. "We think the membership of WTO is beneficial to our country and the development."
Ministers from the 146-nation WTO approved the admission of Cambodia and Nepal to the WTO in Cancun, Mexico, Thursday, making the two countries the first least-developed countries to join the WTO since its launch in 1995.
But in Cancun, Cambodia's Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh criticized the accession process, saying his country had paid a "heavy price" for membership. However, he said Cambodia was willing to meet the challenge, because it benefits the country.
The two countries will become full members 30 days after they ratify the agreement and inform the WTO.
Cambodia first applied to join the global trade body in 1994.
