The Chinese mainland's future economic development pattern will be a metropolitan group with Beijing (BJ), Shanghai (SH) and Hong Kong (HK) as the axis driving the development of north, east and south China, predicted Mr. Michael Sze Cho-Cheung, president of Hong Kong Trade Development Council, at the 5th Annual Meeting of the International Business Leaders Advisory Council to the Mayor of Beijing, which opened in the Chinese capital on September 11.

Sze said that in the next five years, Beijing should seize the Olympic opportunity to establish its position as an economic, business and trade center of the Bohai Sea-rim, north China, northeast China and the country as a whole.

The coming five years will be a "golden period" for Beijing's metropolitan construction, while the 2008 Olympic Games will offer an opportunity for the start of a new round of Beijing-Hong Kong economic and trade cooperation.

An accelerated introduction of Hong Kong's service industry will make Beijing's construction more smooth, he added, Beijing-HK cooperation will, taking advantage of the opportunity offered by the Olympic Games, change from a mono type of investment orientation to an all-round, meticulous type of service orientation.

Not long ago, China's inland signed with HKSAR the Mainland/Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA). After the Arrangement comes into effect next January, Hong Kong's 17 service sectors including advertisement and accounting will be able to participate in Beijing's construction, bringing closer cooperation between the two regions.
