Newly-designated Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei (Abu Alla) on Tuesday met outgoing Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) at the latter's office in the West Bank city of Ramallah, well-informed Palestinian sources reported.
According to the sources, Qurei's meeting with Abu Mazen is part of the consultations and contacts he is making after he had been officially designated as a prime minister and was asked to form new cabinet for the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Monday.
The sources said Qurei is scheduled to meet later with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to continue discussing the forming of the new PNA cabinet.
Qurei announced that he had accepted in principle the post of prime minister, however, he said before he makes up his mind, he would seek for US and European guarantees to facilitate his mission.
Qurei had contacted Israel, American, Arab and European officials to ask for guarantees because he does not want to fail at the end of his mission.
The guarantees are related to ending all the Israeli security and military actions against the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including assassinations against the Palestinians, destruction of houses and the siege imposed on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in his compound in Ramallah.
One of the most obvious guarantees Qurei put forward, is that Israel would be committed to implementing the roadmap peace plan, ending settlements and releasing thousands of Palestinian prisoners.
The sources said the contacts that Qurei is holding with all parties concerned have gained positive, clear and serious responses.
