US Opposes Israel's Killing of Hamas Leaders: Powell
US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday that the United States has been opposed to Israel's policy of target killing of Hamas leaders and its attemptto expel Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday that the United States has been opposed to Israel's policy of target killing of Hamas leaders and its attemptto expel Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
Powell, calling "self-defense activities" the Israeli attacks on Hamas leaders, warned that Israel should consider the consequences when taking such moves.
On Saturday, an Israeli F-16 warplane fired a missile at a house in the heart of Gaza City, where the founder and spiritual leader of the Palestinian Islamic resistance movement Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, was meeting with the head of Hamas' armed wing Mohammed Deif, as well as other top leaders. Yassin was slightly injured in the attack.
"We've always been opposed to this policy. And we have cautioned our Israeli friends that as they do these kinds of self-defense activities, they have to consider the long-term consequences of this policy," Powell said in an interview on ABC's "This Week".
Meanwhile, Powell also reiterated US opposition to the Israeli idea of expelling Arafat out of West Bank, adding that the United States rejected further dealings with Arafat.
The United States has refused to deal with Arafat since Bush took office. On Sunday, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said that Arafat should be deported from his office in the West Bank.
