Arafat Officially Asks Qurei to Be New Prime Minister

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Sunday officially asked Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) Ahmed Qurei, also known as Abu Alla, to take the post of prime minister in replacement of outgoing Mahmoud Abbas.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Sunday officially asked Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) Ahmed Qurei, also known as Abu Alla, to take the post of prime minister in replacement of outgoing Mahmoud Abbas.

Official Palestinian sources at Arafat's office in the West Bankcity of Ramallah said Arafat has officially asked Abu Alla to forma new PNA cabinet, adding that Abu Alla has five weeks to makeconsultations and form his new cabinet.

According to the Palestinian Basic Law, Abu Alla should at firstresign the post of speaker of the PLC and then present his cabinetbefore the PLC for a confidence vote.

On the other hand, the PLC will elect a new speaker for thecouncil.

The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization(PLO) and the Fatah Central Committee have approved Arafat'snomination of Qurei as new prime minister to form his new cabinet.Abbas, who was the first ever prime minister of the PNA, onSaturday resigned after more than two weeks of disputes anddifferences with Arafat over who would control the Palestiniansecurity apparatuses.
