PNA Condemns Assassination Attempt Against Yassin

The Palestinian National Authority(PNA) Saturday condemned Israel's assassination attempt on Hamas'spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin by an airstrike earlier in theday.

Yassin Vows to Revenge for Assassination Attempt

The Palestinian National Authority(PNA) Saturday condemned Israel's assassination attempt on Hamas'spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin by an airstrike earlier in theday.

"The Palestinian leadership condemns the awful attempt to assassinate Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and his aides," the PNA said in a statement published by the state-run Palestinian news agency WAFA.The statement said the attempt to assassinate Yassin "is a serious Israeli military escalation to undermine all the efforts that the Palestinian leadership is doing for achieving calmness and renewing the hudna (ceasefire) agreement."

It called upon the US administration and other members of the Quartet Committee -- the United Nations, the European Union and Russia, as well as the Arab countries to interfere as immediately as possible "to stop the Israeli crimes of assassinations.""These assassinations are against our people and their leadership, and once it continues, it would destroy the whole peace process as well as the roadmap peace plan, and would blow up stability and security in the region," said the statement.

Sheikh Yassin escaped earlier Saturday an assassination attempt when he and his aide Isma'eel Haneya were visiting the house of another Hamas leader in Gaza City.

Israel-launched Air Strike Against Gaza Saturday

Yassin was lightly injured in the shoulder when the apartment in which he was staying was hit by a missile fired by an Israeli F-16war plane.

Arafat Officially Accepts Abbas's Resignation

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Saturday afternoon officially accepted a resignation request presented by Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian official sources said.

Arafat informed members of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in a meeting held at his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah that he had accepted Abbas' resignation.

Abbas tendered his resignation around midday Saturday, ahead of a close-door session of the PLC.

Abbas and Arafat have been embroiled in an increasingly bitter power struggle, especially on who would control the Palestinian security apparatus, and the dramatic development is widely viewed as a heavy blow to the US-sponsored roadmap plan for Middle East peace.

Yassin Lightly Wounded in Israeli Missile Attack

Hamas founder and spiritual leader Ahmed Yassin was lightly wounded by an Israeli missile attack in Gaza City on Saturday.

Yassin and Isma'el Haneya, a well-known Hamas leader, were together in a meeting at the house of Marwan Abu Rass, another prominent Hamas leader, in Daraj neighborhood in Gaza City, Hamas official sources said.

While Yassin and Haneya were leaving the building, an Israeli F-16 warplane fired a heavy bomb at the house, the sources said, adding that Yassin was hurt in his arm and other three people were injured.

Palestinian medical sources at the Shiffa hospital in Gaza City said Yassin was lightly injured and Abu Rass lost one of his legs.

Local residents said they heard a huge explosion and then saw dust and black smoke coming out of the building that was targeted by Israeli missiles.

Hundreds of people gathered near the building, shouting "Allaho Akbar (God is Great)" and "revenge."

Ambulances and fire fighters have arrived at the scene to rescuesurvivals.
