Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, met with Yasuhiro Nakasone, former Japanese prime minister and chairman of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), Tokyo on Saturday.

Wu expressed appreciation for Nakasone's efforts to expand Japan-China friendship in the past several decades, and thanked him for this.

Wu said the APPF is an influential regional parliamentary organization, which has, under the chairmanship of Nakasone, done a great deal. The Chinese NPC is delighted to have the opportunity to host the 12th session of the forum, he added.

He said the NPC is willing to cooperate closely with Nakasone to make the session a success.

Nakasone said maintaining friendship between Japan and China isa common aspiration of the peoples of the two countries.

He recalled the outstanding contributions made by Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping and other Chinese statesmen of the older generation to expanding Sino-Japanese friendship, saying he hopes the saplings of such friendship will grow into tall trees in the handsof statesmen of later generations.

Wu said he hopes that Nakasone will continue to contribute to the development of Sino-Japanese ties, and that China and Japan will strengthen their contacts and cooperation in the regional andinternational parliamentary organizations.

Wu also met with Hashimoto Ryutaro, former Japanese prime minister and current president of the parliamentarians' association for developing Japan-China friendship, and other Japanese friends when they had breakfast together Saturday.

He praised the association for its contribution to promoting Sino-Japanese friendship. "We are glad to see that all Japanese political parties, be it in power or not, have a consensus on expanding ties with China," he added.

Wu said the Chinese NPC is willing to strengthen contacts and friendship with the association.

Ryutaro described Wu's current visit to Japan as "very successful," saying it has left a deep impression on the Japanese people from all circles. He said the association is willing to keep contacts with the Chinese NPC regularly, so as to continue totake part in promoting all-round cooperation between the two countries.
