The White House said Saturday that the United States remains committed to the Middle East roadmap peace plan despite Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas' resignation.
The White House said Saturday that the United States remains committed to the Middle East roadmap peace plan despite Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas' resignation.
"We remain committed to implementation of the roadmap," spokesman Scott McClellan said in a statement. "We are following events in the region closely and our representatives are in touch with all interested parties," he added.
McClellan said the United States will continue to seek the implementation of the roadmap peace plan by working with Israelis,Palestinians, Arab States and other parties of the Middle East quartet.
The quartet, which drafted the roadmap, comprises the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations.
Saying that the Middle East peace process is facing a "critical moment" after Abbas' resignation, McClellan urged all parties to "consider carefully the consequences of their actions."
"We hope the Palestinian legislature will continue to act in a way that empowers the prime minister to fight terror and bring a better way of life to the Palestinian people," the spokesman said.
