German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder reaffirmed Saturday his government's position of not sending German soldiers to
Iraq
.
In an interview with the German TV channel ZDF, Schroeder said that "we have no plan to be militarily engaged in Iraq, and it remains so."
However,
Germany
is ready to offer help in Iraq's reconstruction, including training Iraqi policemen and military personnel, he added.
Schroeder said that the latest resolution draft on Iraq proposed by Washington "is a step in the right direction, but goesnot far enough."
Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said Saturday that he talked over telephone with US Secretary of State Colin Powell on Friday evening to discuss Germany's concrete amendment to the US resolution. Fischer did not details the amendment.
Because of mounting deaths of US soldiers and costs of rebuilding Iraq, Washington proposed that more countries contribute militarily and financially to the post-war Iraq.
But Germany and
France
have criticized that Washington is stilltrying to dominate the political process in Iraq, even though other countries have to bear more burden.
