Chinese Top Legislator Urges Japan to Properly Handle Chemical Weapon Case
Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, Tokyo on Friday urged the Japanese government to properly handle the case of injuries by chemical weapons left over by the Japanese invadingarmy in the 1940s.

Wu made the remarks in his meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and House of Councilors President Hiroyuki Kurata. "The case once again underscored that war-left issues still lay threats to life safety and living environment of the Chinese people," he said.
The NPC leader said the issue left by history is a past one butit also can be a realistic one. He urged Prime Minister Koizumi topay attention to the case.
Wu hoped the incident would be properly resolved and effective measures be taken to prevent reoccurrence of similar tragedy in the future.
Stressing that the proper handling of historic issues is the cornerstone of Sino-Japanese relations, he urged Japanese political leaders to proceed from long-term and strategic perspectives and seek solution to existing problems in line with "taking history as a mirror and looking forward to the future."
Some cylinders containing mustard gas left by the Japanese troops were accidentally found in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province of Northeast China. One woman was killed and 42 other people were injured in the incident.
Koizumi, in response, expressed sympathy and condolence to the Chinese victims in the Qiqihar chemical weapon case. He said his government will handle the case through diplomatic channels with an earnest attitude.
Kurata also urged the Japanese government to cooperate with a wholehearted attitude and take responsibility to destroy the weapons in accordance with related international pacts.
