Turbulence Occurs in Kosovo's Biggest Prison

A group of prisoners occupied one of the five blocks of the "Durava" prison in Kosovo Thursday, demanding better living conditions, said Berry Fletcher, spokesman of the UN Interim Administration in Kosovo.

A group of prisoners occupied one of the five blocks of the "Durava" prison in Kosovo Thursday, demanding better living conditions, said Berry Fletcher, spokesman of the UN Interim Administration in Kosovo.

Fletcher told the Beta news agency that prisoners seized the control of a part of the "Durava," about 70 kilometers west to Pristina, protesting poor living conditions and bad food in the prison, the biggest in Kosovo. No one was injured in the incident,he added.

Andrea Angeli, spokesman of the NATO-led peacekeeping force in Kosovo, said that the incident happened at about noon time when some 150 prisoners prevented guards from entering the block. He said that the situation is under control, hoping the problem to beresolved soon, he was quoted by Beta as saying.

Kosovo, a province of Serbia of Serbia and Montenegro, has beenunder UN administration since June 1999 following 11 weeks of NATO bombing.
