A flood crest feared to be the largest this year on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River passed smoothly on Wednesday through the large southwestern municipality of Chongqing.

Water levels hit 180.01 meters at around 1 p.m., about one centimeter higher than the alarm level, said the municipal flood and drought authority.

The water levels of the Yangtze and its tributaries had risen steeply due to excessive rainfalls since Aug. 28, directly threatening dams and riverbanks, said officials.

So far, no casualties or economic losses have been reported, but rescue teams and medical staff are standing by.
