The Yangtze River Three Gorges Navigational Bureau announced Wednesday that owing to the severe floods in the upper reaches of Yangtze, the Three Gorges Project's navigation will come to halt as of 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

It is the first time for navigation on the project to be suspended since it began trial navigation on June 16.

Over the past few days, continuous rainstorms have hit the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. As a result, the water flow at the dam has surged to 45,000 cubic meters per second, the highest level for navigation, from 34,000 cubic meters per second.

According to the bureau, the navigation suspension is expected to last until Friday but normal navigation will not resume until the water flow drops below 45,000 cubic meters per second.

One of the world's major rivers and China's longest, the Yangtze River boasts the longest navigable course, at more than 2,800 km, and it handles 80 percent of the total cargo volume transported via the country's rivers.

After 10 years of intensive construction, the Three Gorges reservoir began storing water on June 1 this year, and the water level reached 135 meters and over 420 kilometers of the navigable course upstream of the reservoir has become wider and deeper as a result.
