20 killed, 98 Injured as Typhoon Dujuan Hits S. China

Typhoon Dujuan hit Shenzhen City of south China's Guangdong Province Tuesday evening, killing 20 people and injuring 98, according to the Shenzhen City government.

Typhoon Dujuan hit Shenzhen City of south China's Guangdong Province Tuesday evening, killing 20 people and injuring 98, according to the Shenzhen City government.

Two people were missing in the typhoon, which caused the most serious damage of all similar meteorological phenomena to hit the southern city and south China's Pearl River Delta since 1979.

The local meteorological observatory said that Dujuan caused hurricanes in Shenzhen after first hitting the city's Longgang District and later sweeping the whole city.

Power stations were also damaged by the typhoon and power supply halted in Shenzhen's Bao'an and Longgang District. Over 6,000 trees were uprooted and many houses were endangered.

All of Shenzhen's 272 emergency centers were opened to harbor 4,950 endangered local citizens. Over 4,000 local people and migrant workers were evacuated to safe places.

Over 3,000 travelers stranded at local airports and railway stations due to the typhoon were properly handled, according to local sources.

By 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Typhoon Dujuan had left Shenzhen andlocal transportation and electricity supply were back to normal.

Typhoon Dujuan has brought strong winds and heavy rains to the eastern, central and southwestern areas of Guangdong Province since Tuesday evening.

Meteorologists said the typhoon has weakened in the southern province.
