China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said Tuesday his on-going visit to the Republic of Korea (ROK) is aimed to implement the cooperative ideas formulated by the top leaders of the two countries.

Wu is on an official goodwill visit to the ROK as guest of the country's National Assembly Speaker Park Kwan-yong.

Wu said he is delighted to pay his first visit to the ROK, saying the new Chinese leadership attaches importance to its relations with the ROK.

It could hardly imagine a decade ago when the two countries established diplomatic ties that bilateral trade would hit 44 billion US dollars in 2002, that China would become the largest investment target for ROK investors, that some 2.7 million people a year would exchange visits between the two countries, and that some 70 provinces and cities would have forged twin-sisterly relations, Wu told Park.

Wu said that Chinese President Hu Jintao and ROK President Roh Moo-hyun agreed to build up an all-round cooperative partnership during Roh's visit to China in July.

He said his current visit to the ROK is part of China's efforts to materialize the cooperation in various fields agreed upon by the heads of state of the two countries.

He said there are frequent contacts and close cooperation between China's National People's Congress (NPC) and the ROK's National Assembly. This shows that despite the difference of social systems between China and South Korea, both are concentrated on economic development and improving legal system, and are working hard to safeguard regional and world peace and stability.

Wu said the Chinese NPC is willing to further cooperation with the South Korean National Assembly in bilateral and multilateral affairs, thus contributing more to the overall growth in the relations between the two countries.

He said he is looking forward to Park's official visit to China in the near future.

Wu expressed appreciation for South Korea's upholding of the One China policy and its support for China on the Tibet issue.

Park said he agreed with Wu's appreciation of the relations between China and the ROK, saying that mutual respect and trust are among the vital factors that help forge good relations between the two countries.

He said ROK-China relations today cover various fields including the governments, parliaments and political parties. He said he hoped the two countries will enhance overall cooperation through Wu 's visit.

Park reiterated South Korea's adherence to the One China policy.
