The German government reiterated Monday its objection to sending German troops to
Iraq
as part of multi-national peace-keeping troops.
The attitude of Berlin's refusal remains unchanged and is confirmed by other nations, said Thomas Steg, deputy spokesman forthe Office of Chancellor.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry, Walter Lindner, said that the
United States
has not yet asked
Germany
to contribute troops to peace-keeping in Iraq.
But Washington reportedly is pressing for a resolution by the UN Security Council which will allow other countries to send troops to Iraq.
Angelika Beer, leader of the Green party, said over the weekendthat if the United Nations gave a clear mandate and took over the leadership in a military action, Germany could also consider it.
Beer's comments were supported by leaders of opposition partiesbut refuted by members from her own party.
Reinhard Buetikofer, co-chairman of the Green party, said that military involvement of Germany in Iraq is out of the question andwill probably neither be raised in future.
