China's Top Legislator Arrives in Manila for Visit, AAPP Meeting

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, arrived in Manila Saturday, kicking off his three-nation Asian tour.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, arrived in Manila Saturday, kicking off his three-nation Asian tour.

Wu will pay an official goodwill visit to the Philippines at the invitation of the House of Representatives Speaker Jose de Venecia and Senate President Franklin Drilon.

He will also preside over the Executive Council of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP) as AAPP's current president and deliver a keynote speech in the opening ceremony of the AAPP fourth annual session.

Wu will also visit Republic of Korea and Japan. It is Wu's first overseas tour since he took office of the chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.

In a written speech delivered at the airport, Wu said China and the Philippines, two friendly neighbors, enjoy long-standing and traditional friendship. Thanks to concerted efforts made by both, bilateral ties in recent years scored remarkable progress with good results achieved in various fields.

As two developing countries in Asia, Wu said, China and the Philippines have extensive common interests in global and regional affairs. China is willing to continue cooperation with the Philippines and enhance the bilateral good-neighborly, mutually trust and friendly relations for the promotion of peace and development in Asia.

De Venecia and his wife, as well as a number of Filipino dignitaries greeted Wu and the Chinese delegation at the airport.

Wu's entourage include Gu Xiulian, vice-chairwoman of the NPC Standing Committee, and other senior legislators and diplomats.
