Prime Minister Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party (CPP) was officially declared winner of the July 27's National Assembly election by the National Election Committee (NEC) on Saturday.

The results showed the CPP took the lead with 2.45 million votes, followed by the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) with 1.13million votes, and the royalist FUNCINPEC party with 1.07 million votes.

The NEC also released seats allocation for the new National Assembly and the names of the 123 new Assembly members.

Based on proportional representation, the ruling CPP won 73 seats out of the 123 Assembly seats, while FUNCINPEC got 26 seats and the SRP 24. The final results are just the same as the NEC's initial results released on Aug. 8.

There were 5.28 million valid ballots, and about 83 percent of more than 6.3 million eligible voters cast their ballots.

According to NEC Secretary General Tep Nitha, the NEC will send final documents, including the election results and the list of new Assembly members, to King Norodom Sihanouk, the 23 political parties vying in the election, the Senate, the National Assembly, as well as the Constitutional Council and the government before Monday.

And the king will then be expected to call a date for the new Assembly's first meeting, where members will be sworn into the parliament.

According to the Constitution, the new Assembly must convene before Sept. 26, in the 60 days after the election.

And Hun Sen will become the sole prime minister of the new government with the support of the CPP. But before the final results released, FUNCINPEC and the SRP have stated they will not recognized the results and demanded Hun Sen to step down.

Having won the most seats for the new parliament, the CPP will be given the right to form a new government. However, the party is still nine seats short of the two-thirds majority, or 82 seats, needed to form the government by its own.
