Arbitrary fee collection in schools must be halted so as to safeguard the people's interests, said Wu Guanzheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

Wu, also secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, made the remark here Thursday while visiting the Ministry of Education.

In 2002, the country's budget investment for rural nine-year compulsive education increased by 20.4 billion yuan (about 2.46 billion US dollars), which effectively eased the capital shortage in rural education, according to sources at the Ministry of Education.

To stop the arbitrary collection of tuition fees which may increase the burden on rural families, over 663 poverty-stricken counties have set rules to standardize their tuition charges in both primary and junior high schools, sources said.
