China's mainland Wednesday denounced the recent drowning of six illegal Chinese immigrants at sea off Taiwan and urged the Taiwan authorities to severely punish the criminals.
The mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits made the call in a letter to two Taiwan-based organizations for cross-Strait exchanges.
According to press reports in Taiwan, 26 mainland women were lured aboard two Taiwan speedboats bound for Taiwan early Tuesday morning. While trying to evade Taiwan coast guard patrols, the smugglers pushed the women into the sea, leading to the drowning of six women and injury of two.
In the letter, the association asked the two organizations to follow the latest developments of the tragedy and immediately transfer the message to relevant parties in Taiwan urging them to "do their best in searching for the missing people, treat the survivors, quickly investigate and punish the criminals and provide evidence for joint anti-crime operations".
An official with the association said Taiwan criminals had become increasingly rampant in smuggling women from the mainland to Taiwan. The organization strongly condemned such brutal acts and urged the Taiwan authorities to severely punish the criminals.
The official expressed indignation over the attitude of the leader of Taiwan authorities on the crime.
He said it was inhumane for him to make such ludicrous remarks in the face of such cruel criminal acts that destroy human lives, instead of expressing his indignation over the crime.
He called on both sides of the Taiwan Straits to intensify cooperation in fighting people smuggling and various kinds of criminal activities to prevent such incidents from happening again.
