Top Legislator Appoints HK Basic Law Committee Members

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee on Wednesday issued certificates of appointment to the members of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Basic Law Committee.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee on Wednesday issued certificates of appointment to the members of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Basic Law Committee.

There are 12 members, half from the mainland and half from Hong Kong, on the committee, a working organ of the NPC Standing Committee. They were appointed at the first session of the 10th NPC Standing Committee held on March 19 for a five-year term, to succeed the out-going 12 members of the committee, which was set up on Jul. 1, 1997.

The committee has Qiao Xiaoyang as its director and Wong Po-yan as the deputy director.

The appointment ceremony was presided over in the Great Hall of the People by Li Tieying, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC.
