Hipolito Mejia, president of the Dominican Republic, Tuesday called on the nations in Central America and the Caribbean to deepen their integration in an effort to efficiently fight poverty.

According to reports from Santo Domingo, capital of Dominican Republic, Mejia pointed out that integration is the best way for the small economies in the region to respond to the unfair trade practices of rich countries.

"Through integration we will become a zone of trade and progress, because we will be able to think of development," he said in an address to the 12th Central American and Caribbean Conference of Political Parties. "Integration means joining all the energy of our peoples to move in the same direction."

The integration would allow the Central American and Caribbean countries to produce and repair ships, move maritime cargoes in a large scale and promote regional tourism, Mejia added.

The president said unfair trade between rich and poor countries prevents Central American and Caribbean nations from overcoming poverty, which affects over half of the region's population.

Those countries in the region export their products at lower prices and import goods and services from developed nations at higher prices, he said.

The 12th Conference of Political Parties of Central America and the Caribbean began on Monday and will conclude on Saturday.

Mexico, Puerto Rico and the European Union are participating as guests to the forum of delegates.
