The office of the Russian Prosecutor-General has started to compile documents for the extradition of former Russian media tycoon Vladimir Gusinsky who was detained in Greece last week, said a statement issued by the office on Tuesday.
The statement also said the Prosecutor-General's office was deciding whether to send prosecutors to Greece.
Gusinsky, who once headed one of the most powerful independent media empires in Russia, fled his native country in 2000 after being charged with fraud, embezzlement and money laundering. But Gusinsky has dismissed the charges as "politically motivated."
Greek police arrested Gusinsky, who holds Russian and Israeli passports, on Thursday on an arrest warrant by Russia after he arrived on a flight from Tel Aviv.
Gusinsky was detained in December 2000 at his home in Spain at the request of the Russian Prosecutor-General Office. But in 2001,a Spanish court refused to extradite him, saying the fraud case would not add up to a crime under Spanish law.
