Rwanda's incumbent President Paul Kagame has won the country's presidential election for a seven-year term, an official of the National Electoral Commission said Tuesday.
According to Cheikh Mussa Fazil, the commission's vice president, although the counting of votes is still going on, Kagame has surely won the election, Reuters reported.
Meanwhile on early Tuesday, Kagame has claimed victory in the presidential poll, after the commission said he has taken a decisive lead by securing 94.3 percent of the counted votes.
Provisional results from 51 out of Rwanda's 106 districts showed Kagame's main opponent Faustin Twagiramungu garnered only 3.5 percent of votes counted, with a third candidate, former minister Jean-Nepomuscene Nayinzira, winning 1.19 percent.
Under the law of Rwanda, the election is decided according to a simple majority after a single round of voting under universal adult suffrage.
The Monday's election is the first in the African country since the 1994 genocide in which some 1 million people were killed by Hutu extremists.
