Japan to Upgrade Aegis Destroyers with Missile Defense System

Japan plans to upgrade in four years all four Aegis-equipped destroyers with new anti-missile systems developed by the United States, Kyodo News said Sunday.
The upgrade project would be carried out at a pace of one destroyer a year because Japan can not put two destroyers out of duty at the same time in months, Kyodo quoted the Defense Agency sources as saying.
The sources also said about half of the current 27 ground-to-air missile units of Japan are expected to be replaced with more advanced PAC-3 in the same time span.
Japan is planing to deploy as early as 2006 a dual-stage missile defense system consisting of the warship-borne SM-3 and PAC-3 launched from land. The SM-3 is capable of intercepting missiles out of atmosphere, while the PAC-3 is designed to detonate missed descending missiles.
Cost for upgrading four Aegis-equipped destroyers is estimated at 500 billion yen (4.3 billion US dollars), said Kyodo.
