Rhythmic Gymnastics Roundup: Russia Sweep Individual All-round

Russia clean swept the golds from Sunday's rhythmic gymnastics competitions, taking both titles in individual all-round and group multiple events.

Russia clean swept the golds from Sunday's rhythmic gymnastics competitions, taking both titles in individual all-round and group multiple events.

Irina Chashchina clinched the individual all-around gold for Russia after collecting 113.333 points through the four exercises of hoop, ball, club and ribbon.

The silver medal went to Ukrainian Anna Bezsonova with 110.008 points, followed by another Russian girl Zarina Gizikova in 109.241 points.

Chinese top gymnast Zhong li ranked sixth with 92.208 points. Her teammate Zhu Minhong was ninth.

"Chashchina and Bezsonova are really tough competitors and theydeserve their medals," said Pang Qiong, head coach of the Chinese team.

"But Zhong and Zhu tried their best and both performed very well. We were going to try and improve our routines for the worldchampionships through the competition and have reached our goal," she added.

In the group multiple competition, the Russian team led both exercises to accumulate 53.150 points for the gold. Japan took silver with 48.000 points and the host team was third in 46.350.

The Chinese team only sent two rhythmic gymnasts to the competition and didn't take part in group event.
