More Americans would not vote for US President George W. Bush for a second term than those who would, if the elections were held now, a Newsweek poll released on Saturday showed.
This is the first time that a survey by the Newsweek has found more registered voters (49 percent) would not vote for Bush, than those (44 percent) who would.
Twenty-three percent of the registered voters said the top concerns for them in the October 2004 election would be terrorism and homeland security, while 48 percent said economy and employment would be the deciding factors for them.
Sixty-nine percent are now convinced the United States will become bogged down in Iraq, and some 40 percent are "very concerned" that US troops will be there for the long haul.
The poll, which was conducted on Aug. 21-22, covered some 1,011adults aged 18 and above, and has an error margin of plus or minus3 percent.
