Typhoon Krovanh Approaches South China Provinces

Typhoon Krovanh will hit the area between Wanning City in east Hainan Province and Dianbai County in west Guangdong Province from Sunday night.

Typhoon Krovanh will hit the area between Wanning City in east Hainan Province and Dianbai County in west Guangdong Province from Sunday night.

The center of the typhoon was located at sea 550 kilometers southeast of Hainan Province at 2 p.m. Sunday and is moving at 20 km per hour towards the island province, according to Hainan Provincial Meteorological Observatory.

The wind at the eye of the storm was monitored at force 12, with the speed equivalent to 35 meters per second.

Krovanh, named after a Cambodian tree, grew out of tropical storm Krovanh on Friday morning and has become the most powerful tropical cyclone affecting Hainan Province this year, the observatory said.

Shipping suspended due to typhoon Krovanh

HAIKOU, Aug. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- All shipping services were suspended Sunday morning due to the approach of typhoon Krovanh insouth China's Qiongzhou Straits between the island of Hainan Province and the mainland.

Anti-hurricane preparations are underway and ships have been anchoring in safe areas with the help of local maritime departments.

Flights from Haikou Meilan Airport in Haikou, capital of the tropical island province of Hainan in south China, were still operating normally though.

Typhoon Krovanh is the most powerful tropic cyclone to hit Hainan Province this year and the wind at the epicenter was monitored at force 12, with the speed equivalent to 35 meters per second, according to Hainan Provincial Meteorological Observatory.
