More cases of West Nile virus have been detected in different parts of Canada during the week.

Four new cases have occurred in individuals from the southern region of Palliser of the Alberta Province. All cases have occurred in relatively young individuals displaying mild flu-like symptoms and in two cases an associated rash, the health authority in Palliser said in a press release on Friday.

Meanwhile, health officials of Manitoba Province announced the province's second probable case of West Nile on Friday. The suspected case is a man, in 20s, from the Neepawa area in the province. The illness did not require hospitalization.

Friday's developments capped a week in which a number of probable and confirmed cases were announced across the country. The province of Saskatchewan, with six confirmed and 10 probable cases, has been the hardest hit.

Last year, there were a total of 416 probable or confirmed cases of West Nile in Canada and resulted in 21 deaths. All the deaths were registered in Ontario and Quebec provinces.

West Nile is spread to humans by the bite of a mosquito carrying the virus. Mosquitoes get the virus by biting an infected bird.

The virus is not spread by person-to-person contact. Infection can cause swelling of the brain, the brain's lining and the spinal cord, but symptoms are so mild in most people that they seldom know they have been infected.
