Senior Chinese Leader Meets Hong Kong Personages

Senior Chinese leader Jia Qinglin on Thursday called on the people of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to concentrate their efforts on boosting the local economy, and safeguarding and promoting the prosperity, stability and development in the region.

Senior Chinese leader Jia Qinglin on Thursday called on the people of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to concentrate their efforts on boosting the local economy, and safeguarding and promoting the prosperity, stability and development in the region.

During his meeting here with a group of Hong Kong personages headed by Yu Kwok-chun, Jia Qinglin, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the Chinese central government will persist in its basic policy of "One Country, Two Systems," "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong," and high-level autonomy for the HKSAR.

The central government has been very concerned about recent developments in the region, said Jia.

Jia said Hong Kong will tide over its current economic difficulty and strive for a better future so long as the people inthe region unite as one for progress under the leadership of the HKSAR government.
