Editorial Hails National Women's Congress

The People's Daily runs an editorial Friday extending congratulations to the opening of the Ninth National Women's Congress to be held in Beijing from Aug. 22 to 26.

The People's Daily runs an editorial Friday extending congratulations to the opening of the Ninth National Women's Congress to be held in Beijing from Aug. 22 to 26.

The congress is a major event in the political life of the Chinese women and of great importance at a time when the Chinese people are working hard to build a well-off society in line with the spirit of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the editorial says.

Over the five years since last congress, women from all walks of life have made great contributions to the country's reform and opening-up, including the growth of Chinese economy and the advance of the cultural sector, the editorial says.

The editorial says that Chinese women have fully displayed the spirit of "self-respect, self-confidence, self-reliance and self-improvement".

During the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) this spring, women, especially medical workers, have showed their remarkable courage, care and devotion to the life and safety of the people, the editorial adds.

The editorial says that the first 20 years of this century will be significant for China to realize its goal of social development in the new century, which will need efforts from women of all walks of the society.

It will also create huge opportunities for women to display their talent and develop themselves, the editorial says.

The editorial urges Chinese women to take an active part in the social construction drive in line with the direction of the "Three Represents" thought.

The editorial calls on Party committees at all levels to support the work of women organizations helping protect the legitimate rights and interests of women and children, training and promoting female cadres.

The editorial expresses belief that the Chinese women will play an exemplary role in the country's process of building a well-off society and creating a bright future under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Hu Jintao as general secretary.
